Good Diets For Your Furry Friend
I, along with “the boys”, Casey & Foster, want to thank those of you who read this blog and give us your comments. We are not very sophisticated in our use of cyber-space and it is reassuring to know someone is out there.
For this blog we are going to discuss carnivore vs. omnivore. I was driven to this topic while at a pet products trade show recently. Walking down an aisle I was confronted by a handsome grey haired man wearing the nice red shirt clearly labeled with one of the major retail brands found in every big box store and vet clinic. He asked if we sold his products in our stores. I told him we did not. Since it was the last day of the show and I was tired, I told him I was waiting for them to come out with a grain free formula rather than getting into what I really thought of their food as a dog or cat diet.
He said I would be waiting a long time since their company did not believe in “grain free” diets and why would anyone. I suggested that carnivores do not eat grain as one reason. He then took five minutes to explain to me that our dogs and cats are not carnivores, but in fact, true omnivores. He further explained what makes them omnivores. His explanation centered around the rate of metabolism and made no sense. I moved on down the aisle, thinking I had been deceived, was lacking much knowledge and should consider taking one of their courses on canine/feline nutrition.
Back home in the ever pleasant Northwest, and before looking for a place to sign up to take that particular company’s nutritional course I went to the internet to do some research. I can find absolutely nothing to support his argument. However, I find many sources that support what I have always said. Our companion pets are carnivores. Canines and felines lack enzymes in their saliva (amylase in particular which is required to break down cereal grains), their jaws hinge is fixed to go up and down like a scissor, they have no molar teeth for grinding, their eyes are fixed I the front of their head, and the list goes on.
The moral of the story is, when you research dog or cat diet start by looking at those diets created for carnivores as Mother Nature, who is never wrong, has done. Stay clear of diets created by science.
